About Me

Published on April 15, 2006

I am Lisa Grocott, a communication design researcher and Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. I have two graduate degrees, one in Fine Art the other in Graphic Design and this blog is where I think out loud the ideas I am working through as part of my studio-based PhD in Design at RMIT University in Australia. I was born in Aotearoa New Zealand, and after 8 years in Melbourne, moved to Brooklyn, USA in 2005.

    Dear Lisa,

I am not sure if we have met…perhaps a long time ago? I hope this email reaches you somewhere, and that it finds you well.

I am writing to you from Elam at the University of Auckland. I have just returned to New Zealand from California where I was living for some years after studying for my MFA at CalArts. I have returned home to take up a post here at Elam as Programme Leader of Design Studies. I, like you, have a fine arts degree and a design degree leading to my employment here to initiate a new direction for design at Elam which straddles both those discourses. It is an exciting prospect, and a process that I would like to involve a number of people in. You have made such great changes in programmes around the world that I admire and am interested in and would love to have your input into what we do here.

I realise that with your job and studies and practice that you must have very little time, but I wonder if we could perhaps start a conversation?

Meeting in person would be great too if you are able. I am thinking about travelling both to the US and to Australia this year, so perhaps I might be able to overlap with you somewhere.

I hope to hear from you soon,

    All my best,
    Fiona Jack
